Heart Week 4: Emotional Processing and Release Techniques

  • During the emotional development stage or during traumatic or stressful situations we have undigested emotional experiences or emotional patterns when we are:

    • Punished or disapproved of for having emotions

    • Dismissed or invalidated for our emotions

    • The child internalizes being punished or wrong about their experience and develops negative beliefs and patterns about themselves.

  • What to do once you uncover the trapped emotions related to their experience:

    • Mirror - “So when your mom yelled at you it made you feel helpless? Was there anything else you were feeling in that experience? Try to understand them and listen.

    • Validation - “I can see how what happened would make you feel scared.”

    • Go Deeper - Cover emotions are there to keep us out of an unsafe emotion that we weren’t allowed to experience or don’t want to experience. It is good to keep uncovering everything a client is holding and getting down to the deeper layers. Anger may cover sadness or shame. Ask: “Is there more underneath all of that anger that may want to be felt?” “Is there anything else your heart needs to express?”

    • Release - If the client is having a difficult time releasing or moving through the emotions ask them, “what do you need to express your feelings?” or “What do you need to do to release all of this emotion?”

      • Emotions are ENERGY IN MOTION - let that energy flow through and out of them, as long or as much as they need to release.

    • Come back to wholeness - “What did you really want or need in that moment? What could your mother have said or done differently in that situation that would have felt right?”

  • Integration program with HeartMath creates emotional independence and wholeness

  • Personal Exploration:

    • Were there times where you experienced punishment or disapproval for having emotions? Was it specific emotions or all emotions?

    • Were there times when you were invalidated or dismissed for having emotions? Was it specific emotions or all emotions?

    • Were there times when you experienced emotions and you were left to sit in them with no solutions or way of managing them?
